National Disaster Operations Center (NDOC)

Initially established on 21 January 1998 following the adverse effects of el-nino rains. The aim was to coordinate the national effort in reducing the impact of the rains and widespread infrastructural and environmental destructions

Later the US embassy bomb blast in the city in august 1998 affirmed the requirement to have a permanent entity to coordinate disaster management in the country.

  • Oversees disaster response operations around the clock.

  • Works with government bodies and aid organizations to streamline interventions.
  • Engages the Kenya Defence Forces to ensure essential supplies reach affected areas.

 

Disaster Preparedness & Early Warning Systems

  • Continuously tracks potential hazards and risks.
  • Provides timely alerts and warnings to help communities prepare.
  • Develops response strategies and conducts training exercises.

 

Relief & Humanitarian Assistance

  • Supplies essential aid, including food, medical care, and shelter.
  • Organizes evacuations and provides safe refuge for displaced individuals.
  • Ensures affected populations receive necessary support for survival and stability.

 

 

Disaster Risk Reduction & Mitigation

  • Implements strategies to minimize the impact of disasters.
  • Develops protective infrastructure like drainage systems and flood barriers.
  • Educates the public on safety measures and disaster prevention techniques.

 

 

Post-Disaster Recovery & Rehabilitation

  • Aids in rebuilding damaged infrastructure and communities.
  • Supports families with economic recovery initiatives.
  • Focuses on long-term resilience to prevent future disasters.
