NDOC and SpaceX Forge Strategic Partnership to Revolutionize Disaster Response in Kenya

In a significant step toward strengthening disaster preparedness and emergency response capabilities, the National Disaster Operations Centre (NDOC) has entered into a strategic collaboration with the SpaceX Starlink Crisis Response and Disaster Preparedness Team. The partnership marks a new era in the use of satellite technology to support disaster risk management and humanitarian operations in Kenya.

As part of this collaboration, the Starlink team generously donated 20 Starlink MINI Kits and 25 Standard Kits to NDOC. The advanced satellite communication systems are expected to greatly enhance NDOC’s ability to coordinate disaster response operations, particularly in remote and disaster-stricken areas where conventional communication networks are often disrupted.

On 26th May 2026, twenty NDOC personnel underwent an intensive training program conducted by Mr. Peter Knoetgen from SpaceX. The training aimed at equipping officers with practical skills and technical knowledge on deploying and operating the Starlink satellite communication kits during emergencies.

The program was divided into two comprehensive sessions. The first session featured a classroom-based theoretical training that provided participants with an insightful understanding of how Starlink technology functions. Officers were also introduced to real-life case studies showcasing how the technology has successfully been deployed in disaster response efforts across the world.

The second session involved an engaging hands-on exercise conducted at the Humanitarian Peace Support School (HPSS). During the simulation exercise, NDOC personnel were immersed in a realistic disaster response scenario where they practiced deploying the Starlink kits in a simulated emergency environment. The practical exercise gave participants valuable experience in establishing rapid satellite communication systems under pressure — a critical capability during disasters when reliable communication can save lives.

The training significantly strengthened NDOC’s operational readiness and equipped officers with the skills necessary to deploy satellite communication technology swiftly and effectively during emergencies.

The partnership demonstrates the growing importance of technology-driven solutions in disaster risk management. By integrating cutting-edge satellite communication systems into emergency operations, NDOC is positioning itself to respond more efficiently, coordinate faster, and reach affected communities more effectively during crises.

Going forward, NDOC and SpaceX will continue to deepen their collaboration in disaster preparedness and response while exploring additional opportunities to leverage technology in disaster risk management (DRM). The partnership is expected to pave the way for innovative solutions that will enhance resilience, improve coordination, and ultimately save lives during emergencies.

This collaboration stands as a testament to the power of strategic partnerships and innovation in building a safer and more disaster-resilient future.
